Where they came from

Above is map from the mid-late 1800's of Mayo County. Click on it to enlarge it and notice that the green arrow points to the township of Crillaun, which was in the Turlough Parish. Crillaun is where the Chambers ancestors lived. A little East of Crillaun near the mountains would be Cunnagher North, where the Walsh ancestors were from.

Patrick J. Chambers (my great grandfather) noted in a census that he had immigrated over in 1906. I found the Immigration record and found that his last residence he was coming from was Wolverhamton, ENGLAND. He had lived there before with his Uncle Micheal and now was seeking him in New York. The address he would reach would be 207 Loonus Ave, Syracuse New York.

A 1920 census record showed that a Micheal RUANE and Mary E. RUANE were living at Loonus Avenue in Syracuse.

Occupation in 1881: Bricklayer/Laboror
Occupation of Michael in 1920: Teamster

Interesting fact about surname RUANE:

"The name Ruane derives from O Ruadhain who were a sept of the the most powerful and important tribe of medieval Ireland. Our crest is a naked arm couped at the elbow grasping a dagger which signifies an industrious and labourious person. Our motto is "Creso per crucem" which means "I grow through the cross"."

My Great Grandmother ANNA WALSH

A picture of Anna Walsh(standing) with her sister Mary Walsh(sitting).

According to family history, Anna immigrated to the United States with the intention of becoming a nun. It is still questionable whether she arrived at the port of entry in Boston or Ellis Island. While she was attending school she was writing Patrick J. Chambers and in contact with him through Patrick J. Chambers cousin Thomas. Patrick talked her out of becoming a nun and they married sometime between 1908-1910. They were all previously friends and had grown up together because their townships were right next to one another.

Interesting Facts about Patrick J. Chambers
*His immigration background
*His almost fatal accident

*THE STORY OF HIS IMMIGRATION
Patrick J. Chambers immigrated in the year 1906. The Ship was called the S.S Umbria which sailed from Liverpool, ENGLAND on February 10th and arrived in New York February 19th.

He made his way to Syracuse, New York to start working for an industry called Archbold Brady Co. He was working at this industry with a cousin named Thomas Chambers. November 8th 1906 was a close call to death for Patrick J. Chambers. Read the following article I found in the newspaper archives of Syracuse, NY.

*His Accident
“BIG TOWER FELL ON HIM”
Workman at Archbold-Brady Plant/Face will be disfigured.
Patrick Chambers, employed by the Archbold Brady company at the works in Burnet avenue in constructing the towers which convey Niagra power had a narrow escape from instant death yesterday afternoon when one of the towers fell and struck him in the face and pinned him to the ground.
The towers which are 45 ft high are put together in a yard outside of the shop and are made of wrought iron. Mr. Chambers with several other employees was engaged in putting the parts together and just as the tower was being raised so that one of the sides could be completed the workmen suddenly lost control of it and it fell. The weight iron work struck Chambers on the left temple and inflicted a deep gash that extended from the temple to a point below his nose and his left side was severely bruised. He was thrown forcibly to the ground and a projection on the tower prevented the big framework from crushing him. Bleeding frightfully from the ugly wound Chambers was picked up and after the flow of blood was staunched as much as possible he was placed on a cart and taken to his boarding house at 308 Elm street. Dr. F.R. Benham was called to attend him. This morning he was examined again and it was feared that his injuries were more serious than thought to be. It was reported that his face would be badly disfigured and that it was not thought that he had suffered any internal injuries. Chambers is about 30 years old and is not married. (Taken from Syracuse newspaper of 1906)
This fits Patrick J. Chambers like a glove. We know from census records he immigrated to U.S in 1906. Being born in 1878 he would have been “about 30” in 1908. Also keep in mind that Patrick and Anna were not early weds, they married in their early thirties. He and Anna did not marry until he was about 32, she 31. They married sometimes between 1908-1910. In the U.S 1910 census they had “Thomas Chambers” living with them. That was most likely Patrick’s cousin.

Patrick Anthony Chambers was born November 25th, 1913 in Syracuse, NY.
